WORKSHOP PROGRAMME
1.
The Workshop theme is “Sustaining
Impact: Strategies and Approaches towards Transformation from Poverty Reduction
to Sustainable Development”. The Workshop
Agenda has been prepared by the Organising Committee in close consultation with
IFAD Ethiopia Country Office.
LOCATION AND VENUES

The Wor kshop
will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia at the following venue:

The Hilton
International Hotel Conference Centre is about 6-7 kms
from Bole International Airport and located in the heart of Addis Ababa.
GETTING TO ADDIS
ABABA

Addis is served by Bole International Airpor t, which is approximately 7 km from the City Centre. Please contact your travel agent
or airlines in your country to book your flight as soon as possible. Airlines that connect to Addis Ababa include
Kenyan Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Air Rwanda for those coming from Africa,
and Lufthansa, Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM), Turkish Airways for those coming
from Europe. Connections can be arranged through Nairobi. There are Taxi services from the
airport to the city centre at a fare of about US$ 10-15. The local Organizing
Committee has arranged airport pick-up and drop-off for those participants who
have communicated their travel plans in advance and are staying at the
designated hotels. Main hotels have their own transport to and from the
airport.
FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS
4.
Your
workshop fee of US$ 500 (Five hundreds)
will finance the costs associated with the use of conference facilities and
equipment, provision of lunch and refreshments during the workshop, transport to
and from the airport and during field visits as well as secretarial support. Participants
are expected to finance their own travel cost, hotel accommodation in Mozambique,
other meals and incidentals.
TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS
5.
Participants
should make their own travel arrangements/flight bookings as soon as possible,
as well as making arrangements for
obtaining a visa for Ethiopia. To avoid
any inconvenience, you are advised to book flights well in advance. Transfers from the airpor t
to the hotels will be arranged by the local organising committee if the infor mation is provided to the committee, the latest by
5 October 2012. A dedicated e-mail address has been
established to facilitate communication with the organising committee and
participants are kindly invited to use this e-mail for all communication
related to the workshop. Participants should therefore notify the organising
committee at riw2012.ethiopia@gmail.com
by filling in the participant for m
indicating arrival/departure (flight number and time).
VISA REQUIREMENTS
Among the ESA countries Kenya is the only country exempted
from visa requirements for Ethiopia.
6.
Non-exempted countries. Check
the visa requirements and submit a written application to the Ethiopian embassy
nearest to you and attach the official invitation letter sent to you earlier. Offices
in the region can be found in Johannesburg, Harare, Luanda, , Rwanda, Kampala, Nairobi
and Dar-es-Salaam.

there is no Ethiopian Embassy in, or near, your country please send your passpor t details (full name as written in the passport,
passpor t number, dates of issue and
expiry and type of passpor t) accompanied
by a scanned copy of the relevant page of your passport via email no later
than 01 October to: riw2012.ethiopia@gmail.com.

IMPORTANT
INFORMATION FOR PARTICIPANTS
ACCOMMODATION
8.
Participants
are advised to stay in one of the hotels or boarding houses indicated in the
list below. The workshop Organising Committee has made arrangements for
transport to and from the workshop from these hotels. In order to ensure that
participants can stay in the hotel of their choice participants are requested
to communicate their preference to the following address: riw2012.ethiopia@gmail.com by October 5, 2012. Participants who
decide to stay in accommodation not listed in the attachment will be
responsible for organising their own pickup and transfer to the workshop venue.
9.
Participants
must pay their own accommodation costs, together with all extra expenses
incurred (e.g., mini-bar, laundry, telephone, Internet and all Business Centre
services, etc.) and should settle directly with the hotel. Participants who wish to make their own
accommodation arrangements other than the indicated hotels should notify the
organisers that they are doing so.
MEDICAL SERVICES
10.
The Organising Committee will liaise with recognized
medical service providers in Addis Ababa should any medical emergencies arise during
the Wor kshop. However, neither the
Organising Committee nor IFAD will be liable for any medical costs. Such costs will
be the direct responsibility of the participants.
VACCINATIONS
11.
Yellow
Fever vaccination is
obligatory and you may be required to show proof of this when applying for your
visa or when entering Ethiopia. As Addis Ababa is a malaria free city taking a preventive
anti-malarial drug is not recommended.
GENERAL INFORMATION ON ETHIOPIA
12.
Electricity; Voltage: 240 volts, 50 Hz, AC. The plug in use is in most places the two and
in some places the three pin round.
13.
Telephone
Services: Land line service is widely used, while
mobile service also is also widely available in Ethiopia. You can easily purchase prepaid Cell phone
cards in hotels and shops at the cost of approximately US$ 3. Telecom Ethiopia
is the only operator in Ethiopia and air time ranges for from USD 5-20.
14.
Weather in November: The rainy season in Ethiopia occurs between June and September. November
is known with intermittent rain but sunny. The mean maximum temperature in November
ranges between 18-22 degrees Celsius, where as the mean minimum temperature
ranges between 12 -16 degrees Celsius. Addis is well known for its moderately warm
temperature during the dry season.
15.
Currency: Ethiopia’s currency
unit is the Birr (Birr). The exchange rate is about 17.8 to US$ 1 but
fluctuations may occur and a slightly different exchange rate may be used by
the time of the workshop. Changing money
is easily done through Banks and in hotels.
16.
Credit Cards: credit cards are accepted and ATMs are
available at the Hilton and Sheraton International Hotels. However, it is
always safe to have sufficient hard currency for the duration of the Workshop.
17.
Language: The official
language in Ethiopia is Amharic. English is widely used as a working language
in international business organizations, universities, research institutions, hotels,
shops and restaurants.
